INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY ART EXHIBITION 2019: EMPOWERING WOMEN

International Women’s Day Art Exhibition 2019: Empowering Women
By Dr. Grace Choong Ai May

Venue:Performing Arts Centre of Penang

It is a great honour for me to present this exhibition by 40 women artists who take part in International Women’s Day Art Exhibition –Empowering Women.  25 women artists are from Penang and 15 women artists are from Kuala Lumpur.  To commemorate International Women’s Day that falls on 3 March every year, our art exhibition is showcased for three weeks long from 3 March to 22 March 2019 at Performing Arts Centre of Penang.  We hope to illustrate a more holistic view and creative artworks of the women artists of Malaysia.
The women artists of today identify themselves with their artistic creation as art provide a platform for them to express their inner feelings and the process is very therapeutic.  As today’s world is very hectic and stressful, women have to play multiple roles not only as nurturer for the family at the same time have to work and provide for the family too.  The artists gather to celebrate and renewing their bonds to support each other as sisters. They work as a team to provide inspiration and courage, for the experienced artists would encourage the new ones to take part and explore more medium and subject matter.
Our exhibition comprised of 40 paintings with different media such as oil on canvas, Chinese ink painting, acrylic painting, pencil drawing, watercolour and mixed media.  The genre showcasing are floral, figure, animal, still life, nature, building and abstract art. The overall paintings project femininity aspect and delicate observation of the women artists.  This is the second year that we organize International Women’s Day Art Exhibition.  I would like to express my special thanks to Madam Tan Lean Kee and Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara for their support and sponsorship.  I hope there are many more years to come that we can expand and promote our art to the world.  Together we celebrate Women’s Day!

Mid-Autumn Festival Art Exhibition 2019

Mid- Autumn Festival Art Exhibition 2019: A Time to Celebrate and Foster Friendship
月圆花好中秋节画展
By Dr. Grace Choong Ai May

Mid-Autumn Festival is a much celebrated and observed festival in Penang as we see shops selling lanterns and mooncakes.  It is a season of reunion for families and we pay homage to our ancestors and the Goddess of Moon, Chang-E.  Children are happy to hold and play with lanterns.  Mid-autumn Festival is a time where the old school scholars wrote calligraphy, art and poems that was a sharing time to foster the relationship among family tie and friendship.  As artist, we express our feelings about this festival through our art.

This exhibition is to display 40 artworks by 40 Malaysian artists.  There are paintings and drawings of different media.  Watercolour is a favourite medium among the Penang artists, we have watercolorists Alex Leong, Liau Sin Fah and Anthony Cheah to name a few.  Besides there are many artists who paint Chinese Brush paintings like Ang Tin Kean, Jin Toh, Jennifer Loo and others.  Artists Teh Ee Ming, Ong Ah Koy and Dr. Grace Choong who love to express this auspicious festival through acrylic.  Tim Teh who did an oil painting, Heng Chin Ching has created an oil pastel dan Chow Zhi Iong has created a colour pencil piece.  This art exhibition has showcased different genres of expression.  Colourful execution and expressive brush stokes are used to tell us the stories of Mid-Autumn Festival by each of the artists.

I wish everyone a meaningful Mid-Autumn Festival.  Those who stay afar must always come home to visit your elders and family.  Friends should gather more often to foster friendship and support.  More people indulge in art and art appreciation to make life a celebrating and memorable one!

Thank you.
